Practicing Awareness of Microaggressions

My observation of this situation this week left me wondering how we can better educate our students of the diverse population that they live in.  Instead of sitting back and waiting I spoke with our school psychologist about the lack of education our students have on discrimination, prejudice, and how they stereotype each other.  Her office is in the process of setting up assemblies with the medical field on base to discuss some of these issues with students and the effects of ones actions can have on another student.

  1. It is admirable to see that you are advocating for the students at your school who are being marginalized. Education is an excellent first step to making children aware of the impact that their words can have on others.
It is also interesting that the girls have adapted to and accept the comments made without commenting back. It would be interesting to know if this is a tolerance of other's beliefs or a resignation to the fact that their displays of affection will offend others.

  2. It's a shame how students are made to be outcast in our society. Education is the best way to educate everyone on the different diverse ways of our society.

  3. I think schools really miss the mark on teaching tolerance espicially in DOD schools. I teach on base also and they are very political about what they deam proper or improper and I can guarantee that the program you are speaking of will be very limited in what can be taught even in high school. I am doing a unit on Holidays around the World and I am very limited to what I can expose preschoolers too!!!!! It is rediculas that politics override the need to speak about other cultures and diversity.
